Aging Korean¢¥s coping with conflicts in relationship with their offsprings
Youn Ga-Hyun

Abstract
A multidimensional coping inventory was developed to better understand the nature of the relationships of aging Koreans to their adult son and his family. Nine subscales measure indulgence /behavioral disenagement, seeking social support, anger, activity, aggressive coping /suppression, mental disengagement, recollection, avoidance, and self-control. The sample consisted of 428 elderly Koreans between the ages of 55 and 80, and they were divided into subgroups by gender, age, cohabitation status with their married son and his family, and the levels of perceiving conflicts from the relationship with their married son and his family. Results showed a variety of individual differences for aging Koreans in coping with conflicts in relationship with their offsprings. Discussion centered on the implications of these findings for understanding the aging Koreans¢¥ coping styles in conflicting circumstances.
